Can anyone recommend a worthwhile portable studio lighting kit for a cheapskate amateur, wana-be professional. I have a Nikon D50 if that matters. It is my hope to find something under $500, but I expect that to be difficult.

Quick Q about RAW shooting... am i correct in assuming that RAW is essentially a digital negative, the 'bare bones' of an image , different to a jpeg where the camera adds it's own image processing?

I see conversions from digital focal length to 35mm focal length in EXIF data on folks photo galleries, i.e. 800mm (35mm equivalent=1200mm). Is this conversion on any kind of curve or is it a constant? Jim
