Does anybody have any surefire recommendations on getting the best results
from scanning black and white prints on a flatbed scanner.
Whilst my scanner (Agfa SnapScan e20 and ScanWise) seems quite acceptable in
colour, it generates poor black and white scans, showing patterning ...

Whilst I am generally completely happy with the results from the SnapScan e20
when scanning colour photos I am having problems with black and white photos.

Situation:
I am shooting hummingbirds with a Sony DSCH1.  I shoot them at 60-72" from
camera.  I use a manual setting to shoot at 1/1000.  I am having trouble
getting the camera focused at just the right length.  When I use the AF,
