Stupid question here - what's the benefit of the lens shade thing that goes on the end of the lens? Is this something that is needed, or can I leave it off?

Hi y'all.... went to see BB King last Saturday. We were sitting on the 4th row and all I had was my ist DL with Pentax 75-300mm. I've only used the built-in flash, but I still had to change the ISO to 1600 or sometimes 3200, and the photo's are still too dark. Can somebody tell me ...

I've dodged the whole topic of color management until now, because I rarely print and the results have "acceptable" so far. No more. I recently captured my best shot in 20 years, and I'm having a devil of a time getting it to print right.
