Why is that in some MODES with the D200 I get black pictures ? and then if I take the picture wih flash it shows it ? Sometimes I get like the top half picture BLACK ? Thanks

Hi all, need help with this desperately. I have a Vivitar Lens 28-210mm f3.5-f5.6 Macro 1:4x 72mm accessory size, my dad left me from 1989. Serial # 09735757, it says 072mm Universal. Also there is a U near the aperture ring.
