Can anyone confirm if the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is only useable with the 300D, 350D and 20D cameras? will it work with higher end D-SLRs from the Canon range?

Kodak refers to damage that can be caused to circuitry by using an external flash without a device....a voltage regulator I think? Being a newbie I mentioned this nervously to a camera shop assistant who said it was rubbish.
