I purchased an xD Card Reader to upload images to my office XP machine. However, I got a message saying the card needed to be formatted but that by doing so it would erase the images. What gives? Do I need to format the card in camera every time or what?

These seem to go on ebay for about 3 - 400 quid. As a try out of digital SLR, to supplement my Pentax MZ-6, is the Canon a decent digital SLR? David
