I am a journalist and I am writting an article about a new, interesting,
rapidly growing webservices. Now I am collecting the information about
InfoRelation.com .

Equipment list:
* 3 stobes of some sort
* any lighting accessories (soft boxes, umbrellas, etc)
* 1 large backdrop

Although I've owned a digital camera for several years, I'm only just beginning
to discover true photography. One 'style' which I would love to work with is
high-contrast b/w portrait shots with lots of shadow.
I thought that it would be easy. I used my girl-friend as a model and ...

Ok...I have an alien bee on order...but have my flash meter now. As
mentioned...its a cheapie, but shooting digital I just didn't see the need
for a good one that I don't expect to use that much. Its a learning tool. I
have come to expect little by way of documentation now-a-days ...

Can IS be turned off in a lense?
Does IS degrade the quality of pics in any way?
Is IS necessary when using a tripod?
Is IS worth the money if you take a lot of hand held pics?

Looking for some advice on a flash for a Canon Rebel XS.
Preferably <$100.  That's the problem
