Anybody know a good flatbed scanner that will work with Suse Linux?

I want to buy my first digital camera and really need your advice. Although,
I have experience of working with old fashion floppy type digi-cameras,
somehow frastrating due to capacity of diskette.
- I have heard some of them has video mode, is it usefuel?

I'm starting to experiment with food photography and I would like to
improvise a soft box lighting without actually buying a soft box.
Would a piece a paper covering a flashlight or a spotlight suffice?
Any suggestions?

I have seen in my lighting research lots of stuff about using a ring flash
for people shots. How come you don't get wickedly bad red-eye from them,
since they are about as close the the lense as you can get.
