The funny nomenclature of old lenses28 Dec 2004 23:40 GMT16
Just curious:
A lot of old lenses are designated something like "5X7 anastigmat," or
"6 1/2 X 8 1/2 portrait lens," etc.
Why is this?   I assume the lens projects a circular image of the
Roll-film backs for 4x5 - what's good, what's not?28 Dec 2004 22:23 GMT5
I've started looking at rollfilm backs on that auction site and realize
there are a lot out there.  There are Graflex 22 (12 square exposures)
and Graflex 23 (seems like 6x9) in multiple versions, along with other
backs from Shen-Hao, Canham, Linhof, Singer...
Rembrandt Portrait Lens27 Dec 2004 10:39 GMT1
A friend gave me a mint 10"  f/4.5 Burke & James Rembrandt Portrait Lens
today.  I've never heard of this lens before although I do have several
B&J Rembrandt Cameras.
The lens appears to be coated and I'm guessing has 3 elements since I

Will a Horseman 6x* back work with the Technika V 4x5? If not, how can it be
made to work?

a good 4x5 Macro lens?24 Dec 2004 05:10 GMT12
I just bought my 1st 4x5 camera, a Toyo-View 45CX with a Rodenstock 210 lens, but I want to be able to do some macro work in my studio. I saw a few Tominon lenses (35mm, 75mm, and 135mm) on ebay for around $70, which seems really cheap.
Since I'm new at this I'm not sure if that ...

Does anyone in here use one of the Lotus View cameras? I am interested in
your feedback, either good or bad.

Computar Symmetrigon 6,3/210mm22 Dec 2004 18:33 GMT1
Does anyone know the image circle of this lens at 1:22 and at fully open
aperture? Would this lens work properly at 5x7"? How "good" is it compared
to Schneider and Rodenstock?
I cannot find much information about it on the web - but maybe one of you
long lens for arca-swiss discovery22 Dec 2004 13:07 GMT10
I have an Arca-Swiss Discovery with a 150mm lens, and would like to
purchase a longer lens for this camera.  the maximum bellows extension
on this camera is 9", giving a shutter to film plane distance of
roughly 10".
Movements21 Dec 2004 12:17 GMT35
I have a 4x5 Crown Graphic. It is indellibly linked with photojournalism but
hey.. If it makes people wait while you fire the shutter instead of getting
in the way...
Now, I want someone to clarify the technique of using front tilt to increase
shutter release cable extension21 Dec 2004 07:10 GMT15
I wonder if anyone has ever heard of a short extension cable being
available to leave on your shutter so that when you set up or tear down,
you unscrew your shutter release cable from the extension and not from
the lens?

Nature photogs - % of work without  perspective controls?18 Dec 2004 06:27 GMT19
Serious question to nature photogs: what percent of your work used no
perspective control?   Now we all _know_ that it's easy to say "well a
little rise or tilt helps", but I am genuinely interested in finding how
much of the good work required nothing but straight-on shooting. ...
