Minolta lens question18 Sep 2007 00:02 GMT14
After 4 years of non-use I'm resurrecting my Minolta Maxxum film SLR and
noticed a difference between my Minolta lenses and my Canon lenses. When
the Canons are off the body the aperture is wide open, but when the
Minoltas are off the body they are totally stopped down.  These ...

sorry for going slightly off topic, but  have read here long enough to know
most of you carry a P & S along side your SLR's...
sadly my cannon a520 has had one drop too many, and is now not taking clear
pictures..  its going to cost more to have repaired/serviced than to

Nikon Speedlight SB60017 Sep 2007 11:31 GMT6
I've started using the SB600 and I'm not clear about the flash sync settings
that Nikon mention in the D80 & Sb600 instructions. What is the standard
shutter sync speed on the D80 1/60th ? Then they go on about slow sync & FP
sync. Guessing I use slow sync below 1/30th and have ...
laser-assisted AF for nighttime wildlife work?17 Sep 2007 06:22 GMT7
From time to time I dabble in nighttime wildlife photography.  My Canon 1D3
body, 70-200mm f/2.8L lens and 580EX flash can achieve minimally adequate
nighttime exposure up to about 600ft away; I estimate that the sweet spot for
photographing the local night wildlife (coyotes, ...
Now that we have high resolution, why isn't "binning" a standard option?17 Sep 2007 02:04 GMT6
The combining of pixels into superpixels prior to digitization.  4
pixels of 7um become one of 14um.  Low light shooting becomes much
easier as effective ISO is raised.  Not every situation calls for 12
megapixels of resolution, but often situations call for low light
Canon 1DMkIII focus error HORROR continues16 Sep 2007 01:05 GMT24
Imagine;  You are about to spend $5000 on a camera and you could have
a GOOD chance of getting a bad one!
Imagine if this was a car....
I'm beginning to wonder if the problem can't BE fixed.
Photographing welding16 Sep 2007 00:55 GMT2
I occasionally want to photograph some welding in progress.  Mostly MIG, as
it has a relatively small arc.  Has anyone done this?  Is there a danger to
a digital camera that is set back about ten feet, but on zoom to keep away
from the dingleberries (molten blobs of metal)?  I'm ...
This old Canon 300d - is it time for duct tape?15 Sep 2007 12:53 GMT2
The flash doesn't latch down any more.  I wonder if there is an easy
fix for this or what it might cost if I bring it into a shop that
knows Canon?
This is how I'd rate the new cameras:15 Sep 2007 02:07 GMT12
Based purely on mentioned specs:
Nikon D300  9/10 (The D200 was IMO, a work of art, this will be even
better)
Sony A700  7/10  (gets an extra point for low price)
Canon EOS10D autofocus problem14 Sep 2007 22:44 GMT5
Having some problems with autofocus on an EOS10D using 24-70 F2.8 L series
and 70-200 F2.8 L series.
With both lenses, the autofocus works fine when they are near the top of the
zoom range (above 50mm and above 150mm), but is much less sharp when near/at
Idea for camera manual mode14 Sep 2007 16:28 GMT4
What I'd like is when I switch to manual, start with the settings that
the meter suggested on the last shot. Usually if I need to override,
it's because there is something odd about the scene & the camera is
trying to be clever but it's not working and half the time the exposure
