I know I'm supposed to turn off the IS on my Canon 17-85 zoom with the camera on the tripod. But what about a monopod? Off or on?

I am a newbie and have mostly been shooting with a point-and-shoot camera. I would like to move to Digital-SLR photography. I like to travel and so I would mostly be using the camera while travelling and shooting landscapes, scenery, city building etc.

Would a 70mm f/2.8 lens stopped down to f/5.6 have the same DOF as a 70mm f/5.6 wide open at f/5.6? Curious, thx

Taking pictures this past weekend. Most of the exposures were quite long. On some of the exposures, a large dark band is seen at the bottom of the photo. NO FLASH was used, and I would fire off a few more pictures and the band would then disappear. I suspect something is wonky ...
