The 3:2 ratio needs to go, it's a throwback and a stupid waste22 Jan 2007 15:00 GMT64
This ratio is just about worthless.  In the first place, 4:3 ratio is
more representative of professional prints in magazines or any other
forum you wish to consider.  The fact is a more square ratio is used
far more often than a longer rectangle.  The other thing is the sheer
Is CF a Dying Format?21 Jan 2007 17:35 GMT173
I just returned from Wal-Mart having perused their newly replenished stock of
memory cards.  With the exception of one XD and one Memory Stick Pro, the rest
were SD.  256k is the smallest and 2gb the largest with a surprisingly low
price.  There was NO Compact Flash.  Is CF ...
D80 shutter speed question/problem21 Jan 2007 16:41 GMT9
So last night I was trying to adjust the shutter speed before taking a
picture, and for some reason it wouldn't seem to go past 1/200 of a
second.  So I turned the camera off and brought to DBf to show him what
it was doing, and then when he turned it back on, it didn't have that
New tool to view metadata from image files21 Jan 2007 03:22 GMT12
Ever since I got my *ist D I've been digging around inside the image files
to try and understand just what is being stored there. I've decided it's
about time to share this information with a wider body of DSLR users.

Well announced that it will be announced in 20 days.

Seems a D70/s replacement is coming.
Entirely new Nikon model names have had trademark applications
Using Nikon D80 below freezing20 Jan 2007 16:12 GMT13
I have a new Nikon D80 and the outside temperature is below freezing
this week for the first time all winter.
How well does the camera work in this weather? The manual says that
the operating conditions are 32 deg F and above.
EOS-350D stays at "999"20 Jan 2007 12:16 GMT10
For some reason the counter in the display on my EOS-350D stays at
"999" despite taking new shots, but only in the "green" and other
"automatic" modes. In the "creative" modes I believe it advances.
I seem to recall having read something about a limitation to the number
D70 Sensor Cleaning Technique20 Jan 2007 05:43 GMT9
I cleaned my D70's sensor the other day and now it doesn't seem to work
quite right.

Is there some special technique I should have used?
Cable Release on Nikon DSLR Cameras20 Jan 2007 05:41 GMT3
I had an occasion to use a cable release on my Nikon D50 and was amazed that I
could not find one! Do any of the Nikon's have that capability or is it "well
hidden"?

Carrying Practices19 Jan 2007 18:38 GMT27
This sounds as if it came out of rec.guns. Today on the way home in south
east PA there was a spectacular sunset and I mean spectacular and I found
myself wishing that I had one of my cameras with me. I don't carry one with
me but after today and thinking about it I'm gonna start ...
Using the Zone System for Digital Photography19 Jan 2007 18:23 GMT14
I've just put up a note about my thoughts on adapting Ansel Adams'
Zone System for digital photography on my website.  Please see:

Good 300mm zoom for K10D?19 Jan 2007 02:27 GMT15
I'm looking for an SLR for wildlife photography.  The K10D is
appealing for a number of reason including weather sealing, and
anti-shake.  But all that is rather meaningless without the right lens.
Sigma AF 70-300/4-5.6 APO has been suggested.  Good choice?  Better
image recovery19 Jan 2007 01:42 GMT3
Last month, I accidently formatted a card that I had not copied.  At
the time, I was stupidly, and against my own advice I liberally offer
to this forum, penny-pinching on storage ... I was carefully in-camera
editing images and taking new ones.  This leads to nasty fragmentation
Wide-angle lenses18 Jan 2007 20:07 GMT51
One thing that crops up (so to speak) in the sensor size debate is the
argument that there are no good wide angle lenses for smaller sensors. I am
not convinced that this is true, but what lens do you think is missing? What
wide angle lens is needed to round out the lineup?
Buying  a digita camera = Nikon l D8018 Jan 2007 17:50 GMT18
I went to buy  a D80 and walked away the camera just felt very plastic very
disappointing
and the thought of having to remove dust from the sensor put me right off
I could be looking  to sell my Nikon film lens  and camera bodies
