DSLR or Down-payment?28 Feb 2006 22:14 GMT33
Hey, I'm 16, and have been using a Fuji S3000 with some filters and
such for a little more than 2 years. The resolution and shutter lag are
really holding me back and I would like to stop missing shots and get a
DSLR. I got some cash for my birthday, and have been saving up a

Repliies to Portrait Lens for the 20D28 Feb 2006 16:55 GMT6
Thanks to those who replied.  Should I consider the Sigma 30 MM F/1.4 or the
new Canon 18-55 F/2.8 IS?  Both are designed for the digital sensor size.  I
have not seen reviews on these yet.  The 18-55 has not been released in the
USA yet.

What would you recommend as a portrait lens for the 20D?

Question about making adjustments to images27 Feb 2006 18:32 GMT12
I still learning about making adjustments to my digital images. I just got
Photoshop CS but have been using Microsoft's Digital Image Suite 2006 for
now.
Since I'm still a newbie, I'm using large .jpg images to do adjustments to.
Nikon 18-200mm AF-S VR DX Zoom Action27 Feb 2006 15:15 GMT56
I just bought the new Nikon 18-200mm AF-S VR DX and noticed that the zoom
action is not very smooth. It has a very noticeable resistance around 70mm.
Is this normal for this particular model? Has anyone noticed this resistance
in zoom action?
New Pentax higher end cameras27 Feb 2006 05:27 GMT4
Not that I expect many here to notice or care, but Pentax has announced
a 10MP DSLR camera with APS-sized sensor as well as a medium format
(yes, medium format) digital that they will be displaying but not
demoing at PMA next week.
The new 105mm micro-Nikkor27 Feb 2006 03:40 GMT47
Looks like a nice lens, complete with VR, but does anyone know how much
this gem is going to cost?

A wonderful shot.  White it displays one of the two main shortcomings of
a cat lens, Chrlz has taken full advantage and turned that defect into a

Of course, all the pros and cons of the camera are also discussed.
Enjoy and hope you Pentax folks found it useful!

Split Focus Screens27 Feb 2006 00:19 GMT4
This is another question for the newsgroup.  As
I continue to play with my Pentax DL, then I find
the need to use my manual focus irresistable.  I
want to focus on a certain object for effect or
IS on non-Canon lens26 Feb 2006 20:59 GMT7
Are there any manufacturers producing EF-mount lenses with IS? AFAIK there
is none at present; any rumours/ideas whether there are any plans to build
one?

'Stop' history and usage26 Feb 2006 16:04 GMT8
I was wondering how the word stop came to mean cut the light in half?
Maybe someone could provide me with a link to that story.
Also I am a little confused about how to use it.  For example, if I
close the iris one stop that reduces the aperture area by half.  But if
Canon 5D Sharpness Question26 Feb 2006 15:53 GMT13
I bought a Canon 5D and a Canon 20mm lens at Christmas.
I've recently bought a Canon 28mm F2.8 and a Canon 50mm F1.8 Mk 2.
The quality of the picture with the 20mm is always great.
The quality of the picture with both the 28mm and the 50mm is great
