| Flat histogram vs tall | 17 Nov 2005 11:30 GMT | 18 |
What is the meaning of a flat histogram which doesn't approach the top versus a tall one? If it's so tall that it bumps into the top, that's clipping but can medium grays even be clipped? Of course highlights and shadows can be clipped and that's when they go off the right or ...

Dear list members: Since I have now moved entirely to digital I am left with film equipment that is still in excellent condition and very dear to me. I don't anticipate using film again any time soon. So this raises the question: What is the

I am thinking of buying a Canon digital Rebel Xt. I am wondering if instead of buying the kit (body + 18-55mm) it would be better to buy one or two sets of lenses by themselves. Is this worth it (not economicaly, but in terms of having a better set of lens)? What lens

| Canon EF & EF-S lenses | 16 Nov 2005 11:24 GMT | 30 |
What are canon EF-S lenses? What is the difference between EF-S & EF lenses? Are EF-S optimized for digital cameras, to take into account the 1.6x conversion factor on small-framed sensors?

| Compact Flash Card Durability | 16 Nov 2005 03:36 GMT | 17 |
I have been taking my 1GB Lexar High Speed card out of the camera to transfer pictures to my computer. It occurred to me that maybe that is not the best method, as perhaps the pin slots on the card will get worn out. Do most of you guys transfer images via the CF card, or cable ...

| D200: sample pics | 15 Nov 2005 19:16 GMT | 3 |
I was allowed to shoot some sample images with the D200 on Friday afternoon. Dunno what all the fuss was about, the Nikon guys had no problem with me putting my own CF card in the camera and taking a few shots. The shots are in JPEG because the software for reading the RAW

| Nikon Corp profits down 73% | 15 Nov 2005 17:06 GMT | 2 |
Saw a blurb on CNBC last night that their profits are down 73% on the first quarter. I wonder if this has anything to do with the costs involved in bringing the D200 to the market?

| How about a software "zone system" for colour images? | 15 Nov 2005 01:32 GMT | 1 |
I've used the control allowing adjustment of high-mid-low tones in images in PS and PSP and find it very useful in dealing with contrasty images. I dislike histogram adjustments as they don't offer the kind of control that the other adjustment does. But how about offering

| How does automatic white balance work? | 12 Nov 2005 21:38 GMT | 31 |
I don't mean how do you set it, how does it work? It can't read the image -- if you photographed a blue wall it'd think the light was blue and make it a gray wall. It must somehow sense the non-image-forming light falling on the camera. But I'm not aware of a translucent port on
