Nikon 18-70 or Sigma 18-125 for D70?20 May 2005 11:50 GMT1
Has anybody done a comparison and if so what's your assessment? Pop
Photo's chart (Feb05) gives the Sigma high marks for sharpness. I don't
know if PP tested the Nikon. My priority right now is fast AF, and
people say the Sigma is slow. Well, is the Nikon fast and at least as
Nikon D100 vs. D2X Question20 May 2005 04:05 GMT7
OK, here's a basic question about megapixels. The D100 is a 6.1
(effective) MP camera, giving 3006x2000 pixels at large size. This
means that I can just about do a 8x10 print without interpolation (at
somewhere close to 300 ppi) (roughly).

If I want to take close-up photos, is this what I need ? :

or should I be looking for something that goes between the camera and
the lens, or a totally seperate lens?
fast compactflash cards and camera bottlenecks....19 May 2005 22:55 GMT4
I have a nikon d70.  At max jpeg mode on the d70 you can take a burst of 3ps
over 3 seconds before the buffer is saturated.
What I am wondering is, is the camera buffer the bottleneck or is it the
card? I.e If I were to say buy one of these 80x lexar cards, would the fast
Full frame DSLRs not always a good idea?19 May 2005 21:43 GMT16
First of all, this all presumes you have to make shots that
(for lack of a suitable telephoto, etc) need cropping.
Popular Photography had an article which basically stated that a
partial-frame sized DSLR (sensor smaller than 35mm film)could be as
Sigma 18-50 f/3.5-5.6 DC19 May 2005 14:15 GMT4
Does anyone have any experience with the Sigma 18-50 mm f/3.5-5.6 DC?
I'll be using it with Canon 10D.
I'm more interested in bang for the buck, than ultimate performance.
Also- will it work with a film body? I realize the picture will have

This was posted on another group, but it's the first time
I've read some of the comments.

Finding good spots to shoot19 May 2005 04:48 GMT22
How do you find good spots to shot? I know there are good shots to be
had in most places, but I guess one of the things I'm interested in is
finding events that might be worth looking into. For example, there is
an exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens right now, "Locomotion", ...
New Canon18 May 2005 23:03 GMT33
I hope next year Canon will come out with an improved 20D.  All I here in
this newsgroup is the pictures are to soft, banding show's up, or flash is
too dark.
I think they learned from this and the 350 seems to have none of these
Nikkor AF-S 55-200mm DX focus speed18 May 2005 16:42 GMT1
In Ken Rockwell's review of a prototype of the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor
55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED lens, he states the following: "It focuses slowly;
this is not the lens for action."
I have a 18-70mm DX kit lens that came with my D70 and the focus is
D70 2.0 firmare update (yes or no?)18 May 2005 04:32 GMT13
How stable are Nikon firmware updates? I ask because this is the first
update I've ever wanted to make on anything other than a desktop
computer.
Should I wait a week or a month to let problems surface or does Nikon
Is this normal? (D70)18 May 2005 02:15 GMT15
I was shooting some pics today and during a pause the camera hung up on me.
Wouldn't do anything, including turn off.  So, I popped the battery out and
back in and it began working just fine.  Is this fairly normal?
Thanks.
Focus area on D7018 May 2005 01:52 GMT16
I have been using a Nikon 801s for many years and am used to having the
focus on the centre of the frame, by default.  It took me a while to
realise that with the D70 when you set to centre focus, it doesn't
always stay, but moves back to the default of centering on the closest
Olympus E-300 noise not that bad18 May 2005 01:45 GMT26
You can see it in the 3200iso shot, but to me, it looks
no worse than the grain structure of 200iso colour neg. pushed
to 400iso.  It's likely a Canon would have produced less,
especially after post-processing, but the shot here seems quite
Don't forget! (D70 Update)18 May 2005 01:30 GMT8
Don't forget that when you update the firmware it's a two step process.
First you do the A, then you repeat the procedure for B.  Just follow the
direction at Nikon's site.
Good luck.  Now all I need is a cable release and a larger LCD.
