Picked up a Carl Zeiss Jena 3.4-4.5 / 35-70 lens cheaply in Wagga

I looked at my buy price for the G6 and I was amazed. It is well below $1000

I have a question about filter adapters:  If I wish to attach
a 55mm filter to a lens with 49mm filter ring, do I need a
49-55 step-up adapter, or a 55-49 step-down adapter?  I was
