Busted Olympus Epic07 Jul 2004 05:50 GMT16
Goodday, all.
I accidentally busted my Olympus Stylus Epic P&S shooter.  Took it to the
camera store for an estimate of repairs.  To replace the door and power
switch will cost $20 less than a brand new Stylus.  This is a bit rich for
The final word about the longevity of film?07 Jul 2004 03:14 GMT29
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/media/jan-june04/bettmann_06-10.html
According to this interesting article from a real case report about a most
valuable photographic archive (Bettmann's 11 million images of the 20th
century, owned by Bill Gates' Corbis), it seems that if stored in ...
What will happen to classic film cameras?07 Jul 2004 01:16 GMT18
Do you anticipate they'll increase depreciate or increase in value in
years to come?
It's understandable that their prices have dropped significantly
lately as everyone's been riding on the digital wave, but regarding
Nikon Cool Scan 4000 & B&W Scans07 Jul 2004 00:19 GMT4
Just wondered if anyone has had similar experience - whenever I scan b&w
negatives with my coolscan 4000, I get a terrible result.  With colour
slides or negatives, the results are spectacular - just with b&w negatives.
I have never shot with b&w slide, so I dont know if I would ...
[NG] Invitation to review a "Resource" page for the r.p.e.35mm06 Jul 2004 23:48 GMT8
I have composed a "Resource" web page for the newsgroup.  It
contains a plain language description of the group, a link to the
official charter; a brief summary of "wishes" to ammend the
charter, a proposed code of behaviour, will contain "profiles" of

straps06 Jul 2004 16:01 GMT10
For those of you who are prone to traipse around the town or
countryside searching for photo ops, do you keep a neckstrap on your
camera, a wrist strap, or nothing at all and just make sure you don't
drop it.

Contax G1 and focus06 Jul 2004 04:20 GMT15
I have bought a G1 recently - a mid production run model and have had
problems with the focus using the 90mm lens at about 3m.  The focus on a
number of portrait pictures was out by as much as 2-300mm.  The camera has
been green stickered and I cannot believe that it is me who has ...

[SI] Local Culture - The Dave comments...05 Jul 2004 16:17 GMT8
As someone mentioned, it does seem that alot of the mandate was missed
here, but on many I'm not so sure.  There are a few that just scream
'local culture', but I think if one looks deeper into many of the
images that things about the place can be picked out.  I'm going to try
[SI] Because I feel obligated...05 Jul 2004 16:14 GMT9
...what with it being my mandate and all.
Been a busy week, but I finally sat down and set thoughts to pixels.
I got a free Whopper at Burger King once for my opinions, so you can rest
assured they do indeed have weight. Or is it mass?

[SI] XXXI Critique05 Jul 2004 16:04 GMT19
I found this assignment produced a group of visually appealing photos;
there is not a submitted image that I cannot appreciate at some level.
But I do believe that, by and large, the theme of the Mandate was not
adequately imparted.  All the photos depict local scenery, but less
[SI] Local Culture - comments from a rank amateur.05 Jul 2004 15:58 GMT14
I suppose someone needs to test the water on this one, so here goes.
Bring a pinch of salt and pull over a chair.
