Photo before Christmas31 Dec 2009 21:02 GMT6
Yesterday I had the opportunity to take this photo about this celebration:

Thanks for your technical comments about photography, and I'd like to wish
to everyone a most excellent Christmas.
genuine fractals31 Dec 2009 18:32 GMT21
anyone here own it?
I have a smallish file that I have to use large in a calendar. It has
obvious pixellation. Is anyone willing to help me process this into a
larger size?
Post illustrates the problem with auto and program modes on cameras31 Dec 2009 18:11 GMT3
They can't be all things to all people.  There comes a time when you
have to go full manual to control a photographic situation.  Yes, it
would be nice to have a Auto ISO mode that would allow you to set a
minimum shutter speed based on the lens you have attached, but in lieu
Lens Haze Question31 Dec 2009 16:29 GMT3
I have someone shipping me two versions of the Olympus Zuiko 50mm f1.4
lens to purchase one of. (For use on an EP2 - currently have an Oly
50mm f1.8 but not happy with the focusing of it.)
One lens has - according to the seller - "very minor hazing on the
Adding exposures31 Dec 2009 15:04 GMT8
Hello - newbie here (both to the group and to photography).
My entry-level DSLR (Canon Rebel T1i) has a maximum exposure time of 30
seconds.  If I needed to take, say, a two-minute exposure, would it be
equivalent to take four 30-second exposures and then add them together?
Water immersion: increase DOF31 Dec 2009 11:05 GMT15
Someone once told me that one effect of photographing live fish in a
glass aquarium is that the refractive index of the water somehow
increases the depth of field.
Has anyone else heard of this? Does it sound plausible?
To examples of Chinese quality30 Dec 2009 06:16 GMT22
Allowing any kind of weight on such adapters is a huge mistake.  Metal
works well, when it is probably designed.  But some cheap Chinese
manufacturer on the 10,000th thread tapping process with worn out
equipment is not likely to produce a sure product, especially at $20-
Need advice: Panasonic FZ35 vs Canon SX2030 Dec 2009 06:15 GMT94
I am trying to chose between a Panasonic Lumix FZ35 and a Canon
PowerShot SX20 IS.  According to one salesman, the Panasonic is
supposed to have better quality optics and faster electronics;
I don't know enough about photography to tell if this online
Fall Back, U.S.A!30 Dec 2009 06:14 GMT80
Hello, my fellow Americans...did you remember to move all of your timepieces, back
an hour? Daylight Saving Time ended, early on Sunday morning (November 1, 2009), in
our country.
I, personally, needed to reset my wristwatch, several clocks, various electronic
P&S's still have rotten quality (Canon G10)30 Dec 2009 06:14 GMT49
No wonder Canon dropped the pixel count by 33% for the G11.  This
image from a blog on a Death Valley photo excursion is not even
cropped, but LOOK at the noise!  At 1600 ISO, with an image size-
reduced this much, there should be almost no noise visible, IF it came

RANT: Post Processing discussions.30 Dec 2009 04:43 GMT20
What I find pretentious is that Digital Photographers seem to think
that post-processing is some Felony crime that totally invalidates the
Art. Bullshit.
Prior to Digital Photography we had a wide range of film types (all
Real ISOs, crybabies, misinformation.29 Dec 2009 21:30 GMT3
Check out this thread.  A perfectly reasonable relay of information
from DXO about the differences in sensitivities of cameras.  DXO is
probably the only site that deals properly with this clearly evident
issue.  Dpreview tweaks the illumination levels on all its tests shots
Nikon Coolpix LCD is crap in daylight29 Dec 2009 20:54 GMT23
Why do these f.ckers put just an LCD for viewing and no viewfinder if the
LCD is sh.t in bright daylight? I have to guess where the subject is and
hope for the best. You are dumbasses Nikon! OK, not just Nikon but a lot of
camera companies are doing the same thing. You have to ...
Yashica/Contax lenses on dlsr body29 Dec 2009 18:05 GMT1
My old Slr kit includes several yashica bodies as well as several of the
wonderful Zeiss lenses with the yashica/contax bayonet plus a couple of
yashica lenses that were not half bad in their own right.
Now, I understand that one can get converter rings to fit these lenses
