I am considering a new computer but monitors are causing me some confusion.
My digital images are in 4:3 proportion and I want naturally to preserve
that layout on a new LCD/TFT.  But the vast majority of  monitors today are
widescreen.  I do not want images to be stretched. ...

The other day I picked up a Nikon D100 and a Sigma 70-300mm zoom for $200.00
used in near mint condition.  I've seen Olympus and Pentax DSLRs going for
as low as $175.00 as "open box" (store demos).  Why would I even consider
(barring the extreme need for portability) a P&S?

Newbie thinking of getting a Samsung S760 as a first camera. It looks
a well made unit.
But what is the battery life going to be like? The unit takes 2 x AA
