Sony's newest useless gimmick...07 Oct 2007 15:22 GMT12
Just reading today's Japan Times and noticed an ad for a new Sony P&S

i am used to.  But if I am in low light conditions and it is on 'Auto'
flash, it flashes and then holds the shutter *open* and then flashes a

Im wondering if there really is a substantial quality difference
My first shot of a lightning bolt.06 Oct 2007 21:48 GMT8
When a Pana FZ20 was my main camera, one of the features I longed
for was a manual exposure time longer than 8 secs so that I'd be
able to take pictures of a lightning bolt. My current camera is
an FZ30 with a maximum of 60 secs. We had a thunderstorm tonight

Compress different parts of a pix by different amounts?06 Oct 2007 12:58 GMT15
I don't know the proper terms, but here's the idea.

Use a combination of pixel scaling and compression to
get a highly compressed picture, small file size, picture 1.
bitdepth of CHDK RAW files (powershot)06 Oct 2007 08:37 GMT1
Does anyone know what the bitdepth is of RAW files shot with a

Also, what is the best way to convert such RAW files to DNG or TIF
in a way that yields the same resolution as JPG files created by the
ceramic lens in digital cameras06 Oct 2007 03:17 GMT52
Casio introduced a transparent ceramic lens in their Exilim line
camera, model EX-S100 a few years ago. Has the ceramic lens been used
in other Casio's digital cameras? What about other digital camera
manufacturers? Will ceramic lenses eventually compete with glass
Digital Camera SCART Adaptor Warning!!!05 Oct 2007 20:19 GMT1
While on holiday I connected my Nikon Coolpix 4300 to a TV to play
back my photos using a SCART adaptor, which I had done on previous
occasions without problems. On this occasion I carelessly flicked the
adaptor switch from input to output when I could not get a signal. The
