Could somebody please explain the jargon used to denote the sensor size? I mean numbers like 1/1.7. How does this translate to actual size (dimensions or area)? What is the typical size for DSLR?

I have a Casio EX-S600 point and shoot digital camera. I upload images from it to my computer (MacBook). When I open a folder of such images, the column for DATE CREATED is blank. I am able to see the DATE MODIFIED, which just becomes the time and date I uploaded them
