Or do I need a newer camera?

Many years ago, I used a Minolta XGM SLR camera, for which I still have
a number of lenses.  Now that Digital SLR's have come down in price, I'm
thinking of buying one.  However, I would like to continue to use the
lenses that fit the Minolta XGM.

My Olympus C-750 is loosing the date/time when I change batteries, even if
it the batteries are out for only 5 seconds.
I can't find instructions on replacing the battery or capacitor that is
supposed to hold that information during the no-battery time.

I have been checking out the Canon A540 as a replacement
for my wrecked A510.
The spec all looks very nice, until, on close reading,
I noticed the display.

How would portraits on a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM compare to
portraits taken with a Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM. I want to buy a 100mm
lens, and I want really sharp images. I want to take portraits and take
pictures of little things like bugs.

Look at these piccies. The composition is not awing, but the
photoshopping turns many of them into gorgeous eye-candy. Who's a
wizard here? Care to comment?
