Is it for some reason cheaper to make a lens with f=diagonal of film frame, or is it because of the higher demand?

I just bought a Sigma EF-500 Super for my Nikon D70. Did I screw up? I can't get the camera to shoot when the flash is in TTL mode, no matter what settings I try. I can only take pictures with the flash in M mode.
