Lets say that this year, I have to take a photo of a family. Mom, Dad,
younger daughter 17 years old and older son 24, with their Labrador labrador
retreiver Max....I take the photo, no problem.
Advance 5 years, I take again the photo of the familly, but I take it in the
same location, around the same time, with similar weather. The family has
grow because the son (29) is now married and has a 2 daughter. The daughter
(now 22 is also pregnant. The picture is taken as if it would be an ADDITION
to the photo 5 years earlier.
So when i get back home on my computer i digitally arrange the picture as if
it would be a photo of 10 people plus 2 dogs.
Repeat the step for the next 30-50 years (6-10 photoshoot total).
If the composition is well planned, I think you would end up with quite an
interesting photo. Kind of a snapshot of someone life on a .....5 feet x 1
inch photo.
What do you think?

It's not to my tastes, but I imagine that a few people would love the
idea.
Just a thought. Take the second picture inside, in your studio, so
you can control the background so you can take it out when you add the
people. Also, take the people 1-at-a-time so you can move them
around.

Recently saw someone advertise their business in these groups doing
something that in the end is very similar. They create a large background
and arrange cutouts from supplied family photos onto it. Given the right
material it becomes a visual family tree. Pretty nifty idea actually. And in
this manner can be accomplished must faster after the fact.
Building it in real time for your own family is a great idea though, however
saddening some parts of the progressions may become. Just be careful to pass
the ability to continue the process on to as many offshoots as possible so
the project doesn't end when you do!

June 27, 2007, from Lloyd Erlick,
I think if you actually do this (spend the
thirty to fifty years, that is ...), you will
be a hero.
But if digital manipulation is involved, it
might be hard to accept that thirty to fifty
years were involved.
The work of Nicholas Nixon is interesting in
this regard.
I hope you do it; I hope I get to see some
portion of it, too ...
regards,
--le

I think 30 years is probably long enough. I'd say go for it - and don't
forget to post the results here when you've done!
