Recently I took a 1GB memory chip from a Sony DSC W80 to Walgreen and they transferred the images to two cds. The camera is new so I am not in tune with all the options etc. Looking at the images, on my computer, the landscape pictures seems not as sharp as I expected (?). My question is when I take a chip and get a CD do I lose some of the sharpness. Pictures were 7 MP. If not it must be me or the camera?. I was looking at a typical picture the specs are 3072 X 2304 (~7 MP) with 24 bit color (16.7 M). Interesting that my computer says the file size is 2.4MB but (7 MP X 24 bit color)/8= 21 MB ?????. What am I missing here. The reason for using Walgreen was the photosoftware with the camera is not capable with my computers OS, in addition my memory card reader does not support 1GB memory card. I have not verified that but I will!. It seems, and this is very prilimary, that landscape on the subject camera may not be as good as others which I am more than ready to listen to. This camera is for my wife who is not a photo person but on vactions and other events she wants to take her own photos but is should be compact and no interchagable lens. What you are missing is jpeg compression - often about 10 to one on digital cameras - so 2.4mb might be about right. Have you ever read them into a computer to see how big they are? Or calculated an average size from what you fit on a memory card? Or checked manufacturers specs to see what they say is a nominal file size? That may account for why landscape pictures (like mountains in Colorado ) do not appears as sharp as I would like. Since JPEG is a compression process pictures do suffer somewhat (but not very much for most picture takers). Yet, compression may the reason that landscape pictures appear alittle dull.
