I am looking to upgrade from my Canon Powershot S40 to the Powershot
G7, however having looked at the review of the camera on DPReview I am
concerned about image noise.
Is there any of you good folk out there with a G7 that could take a
few sample images for me please, so that I can judge how much of an
issue this would be.
What I am looking for is a close up picture of something like fur
(maybe a cuddly toy? go on....you know you've still got that one from
your youth ;-) ) with a plain background, either light, or dark (or
both maybe?), so I can see the effect of the noise and the effect of
the noise reduction on the fur.
I was happy with the details of this camera until a friend of mine
pointed out the low noise of the Fujifilm F31fd, which is outstanding.
I have done some comparision shots on my S40 and I can see the noise
kicking in around ISO 200, but it's not too bad, so if the G7 is the
same, or better, then I'd be happy with it.
Most of my images will only ever be printed out in 6x4 or 7x5, so I am
not sure whether the noise will be an issue at all. However if it
turns out the G7 is too noisy then I'm stuck, because only the G7 has
all the features I want i.e. manual control, aperature priority, flash
control, 35(ish) to 200(ish) mm zoom, viewfinder and image stabilizer.
Thanks for reading this post.

Taken at BB Kings club in NY City. All images with G7 at ISO 800.
No post processing of any kind.
ISO 1600 generally is pretty bad and needs some noise reduction in
post processing.
The 3200 Mode is useful except it only produces a 2 MP image and you
can't make adjustments to the metering (only evaluative) and to the
exposure compensation.

This shot here says it has a focal length of 44.4mm. I never used a small
camera like this, but only an SLR, so what is this equal to in terms of 35mm
photography? Is this number smaller because the actual lens is smaller? Are
ther any equivalencies here? A table or something?
Joe.

The *sensor* is smaller than a 35mm frame. From the following:
http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_Camera/PowerShot/
PowerShot_G7/index.asp?specs=1
Focal Length 7.4 - 44.4 mm (35mm equivalent: 35-210mm)
And before splashing out your money, go to a shop where you can handle
a G7 to try to be sure you will enjoy using it. Buying by
specification only is not effective IMHO.

Thanks for that little conversion. I had a feeling it might be that, but
wasn't too sure.
About the G7...'I'd miss the grip, but could get over it if only for the
quality of shot it takes.
It's pretty much fully-featured too and at the price, seems like a great
camera to buy.
Cheers.
Joe.

Steven,
Thanks very much pointing me to those photos. I can see that the black
background is subject to noise due to the high ISO, although probably
not too bad. For the type of photos they are I think they're very well
taken and quite bright on the faces, which is excellent.
I think I would have been perfectly happy with the images from the G7
if my friend hadn't pointed out the quality of the Fujifilm
F31fd .... :-|
I guess you are an owner of a G7, so how do you find the camera
overall? Does the image stabiliser help you to reduce the ISO rating a
bit when taking indoor photos? and hence reduce the noise?
Thanks again.
Joe, in answer to your question the focal length (all those techies
out there please correct me if I'm wrong) is a figure given in
relation to the effective distance from the end of the lens to that of
the film plate.... obviously it would not be good to have huge long
lenses on cameras, physically, so by adding lots of extra lens
elements you can reduce the physical length of the lens whilst at the
same time keep a high "effective" lens focal length. When the lens is
attached to the camera there is a certain distance between the back
end of the lens and the actual film plate ..... in digital photography
the distance from from the back of the lens to the CCD is much smaller
and hence the figures you see for focal length are tiny compared to
that of 35mm cameras.
If you go onto a site like "DPReview.com" they give the equivalent
35mm focal length to help people like us. To give you an example, my
Canon Powershot S40 has "7.1-21.3mm" written on the lens, but the 35mm
equivalent is stated as 35-105mm.
Hope this helps and hope my memory on this bit was correct!

I got it. Thanks for the explanation.

Hiya,
I've posted (temporarily) a few samples at
http://www.polhill.vispa.com/g7_samples/
I *meant* to choose 400 for the first few, but accidentally left it in "easy"
mode so they're Auto. I have no idea what it chose, but I suspect it was 100
or 200...
There is a 400 ISO sample there and a couple of 80 ISO samples just to show
what it can do.
The 3648 x 2736 originals are there as well so you can get an feel for what
the full size pictures are like. Please feel free to download them and use
them for what you want, print them, etc., but please do so within the next
week as I'll take them back down next week.

That's excellent, thanks Richard and thanks to everyone else. I've
managed to locate a camera at a local store, so will go and check it
out at the weekend. I am also considering the option of buying a
camera like the Fujifilm that has an accessory teleconvertor to turn
the 35-1xx focal length into more like 35-2xx overall. Has anyone had
any experiences with using these teleconvertors that clip or screw
onto the front of compact cameras?
Thanks
Philip

I haven't any experience using one but there is one available for the G7 too.
