Got my first digital SLR..a D80 (all my optical Nikkor lens work just
fine).  Working out well, but I have a question.
I'm using multiple memory cards.  When I take photos, I'm getting the
same file name on multiple cards.
This is stupid (or maybe I am stupid)..why can't I name the pictures
by some date/time algorithm.  Manual doesn't help. How do you all
handle this?
Thanks
Jerry

Not sure if this works for you, but it's like this on my Sony:

There are two settings on "serial".  One is where every picture you take
starts from zero, no matter if you create another or one hundred more files.
One can reset it so that it changes from that and every first photo in every
new file is DSC0000001, and then the second is ...0002, etc.

One way is handier for some things, but when filing on hard drives, there
comes a time when there's duplicates, and they have to then be renamed, a
long tedious process.

Look in your little instructions book there, and see what it says.  You may
have even more options.

Or, in your file folders, you could use disc one as 1** folders.  Mine
starts with 101.  Then on disc two, you could make the first folder start at
201, but that may be a long process to get it to ratchet up from 101 to 201
depending on the Nikon..  It all depends on how your Nikon works.

The secret is somewhere in that big instructions book.  If not sure, maybe
Nikon or your card manufacturer has a help line that could help you reformat
your cards with other than default settings.

HTH and good luck.  I am shopping the D80.  Keep me posted.  Do you post in
alt.binaries.(birds)(photo.original)?

Check that.  I meant to say that the first photo in every file you create
starts from 0001.  (If you've selected the "reset" option.  If you have
"serial" selected, the numbers run consecutively even if you create or move
to another file.

I don't mess with image file names on the camera  SD card. I don't
even know if I can or not. :-) I am also new to digital and also
recently purchased a D80 with the Nikkor kit lens. All my 2.8 AF
Nikkors also work fine with it.Simple person taht I am, I simply
download the images from the SD card into a folder on my PC. There is
an image file renaming option in the software and I create a specific
folder ID for it and it's done.

Hope this helps.

It's definitely in there, I don't recall where but it is ;-)
