My First DSLR - Pentax K100D

I've been wanting a DSLR for a few years, but held back from the high
prices, confusing specs and profusion of models, and the rapid
technological improvements that kept coming through.  I had "decision
paralysis" for a long time.  Now I'm past that, and for me the time has
finally come.  Today I placed my order for a new Pentax K100D.

Yeah, it's only 6.1 MP.  I know from experience that 3008x2008 pixel
images will be plenty good for the vast majority of my uses.  The new
Pentax K10D will attain 10.0 MP.   That translates to about 64% more
data produced that I have to store and process, while the increased
definition would rarely (if ever) be useful to me.  So. . .  In my case
I actually preferred the lower MP count.

It has anti-shake technology that works with almost any Pentax lens?
Count me in!

It uses ordinary SD cards for storage and, more importantly, it uses
four AA batteries.  There's not many DSLRs out there using standard AA
batteries; it can take NiMH, Li-ion, or even alkaline batteries in an
emergency.  This gives me a sense of comfort because I might possibly
be using this camera for a very long time.  I used the same 35mm SLR
for more than 15 years and would have kept using it indefinitely if I
hadn't felt the need to get away from film.  Ten years from now I might
not be able to find an oddball Pentax SL7-9938-A2 Li-ion battery pack,
but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get AAs in some form.

Good move. Look forward to seeing some of your work.

Tony,

I highly recommend tracking down some Sanyo Eneloop NiMh AA batteries.

I have a DS using AA batteries they are excellent, I have a K10D using
proprietary batteries, already there is other manufacturers packs that will
fit (Minolta NP-400), I doubt that there will be a problem with the packs,
if that is all you are worried about then you may need to re-evaluate what
you need in a camera, perhaps a nice Canon P&S will do..

Pete.

Where did you get the K10D.
How much did you pay?

Some might think worrying about the batteries is a bit silly.  I dunno.
. .  Maybe it is.  But with the K100D it's not like I'm giving up
anything else for the sake of using AA batteries.  It's reputedly a
good camera.  And I did look at non-SLR cameras (the Sony DSC-R1 looks
particularly interesting), but . . .   They didn't do it for me.  I
miss my old 35mm SLR and I want to get back into that kind of system.

I'm not familiar with the Sanyo batteries, but I have some Sony 2500mAh
batteries and a charger than can achieve a full charge in only 15
minutes, which is the fastest I've seen.  And, the K100D can also use
CR-V3 lithium batteries.

I have been using Energiser Lithium batteries and have found they are
excellent, though they reach the end of their life all of a sudden.
They last much, much better than the Uniross rechargeables I have.  I
live in the UK and buy them from 7dayshop.com - they are in the Channel
Isles and I don't have to pay VAT on stuff under £18 I buy from them.
It still pays to check prices though!

There seems to be only 1 supplier in the UK for the Sanyo batteries, and
I note their capacity is 2000mAh - somewhat less than the Uniross
batteries though not losing charge in storage would probably compensate
for that to a degree. The one supplier also has a note on their website
'not yet available'!

I use re-chargeable NimH AAs in my *istDL.
I have two sets and a car charger.. I charge one set and then rotate them
once used.

I have also used CRV3s I was well impressed with the life from them...

That's the only downside with the K10D that I want... it doesn't take AAs...
So if I'm carrying the DL and K10D (assuming I get it) the batteries arent
common to each other...
I wish they'd kept the K10D as AA battery powered
