Please Comment, Canon Lens EF 300mm f/4L IS USM

I'm using a Canon EOS 20D, EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM & EF 70-200mm f/4L USM
Lens.

I'm going to Colorado in October (Elk Hunting & Wildlife)Photos.

I'm thinking of adding a prime lens EF 300mm f/4L IS USM with 1.4 extender,
Can't afford the f2.8

Please give me any suggestions.

How about the 100-400L? it's on sale right now for just a tad more then teh
300f4 L.

I'm thinking that it has a F5.6 and must be Tripod mounted (Non IS). Have you had
experiance with this lens? I'm looking at $1000 for the EF 300mm f/4L IS USM and $275 for
1.4 extender.

The 100-400 has IS and is a great lens. I have one, and wouldn't part with
it.

These are Canadian prices but I think the sale is on in the states too. I
got the 70-200L f2.8 from these guys. If you look at the price of the
300f4L its 1539 and the 100-400L is 1749. The difference is less then the
price of an extender and the 300 with the 1.4x will become a 5.6 anyhow no?
If I had the cash and I was the OP I'd go for the 100-400 and the 1.4x for
some really crazy zoom (I plan on getting this when I've got some more bucks
to invest.)
