I've been using a Canon EOS 5 for years and love it and its lens
interchangeability, but at this time, I can't afford to buy a digital SLR.
From the research I've done, digital cameras seem to fall into three general
groups -- small almost pocket sized units, middle sized with or without
built in zoom lens, and the upper bracket dSLRs.
What I would like to find at this time is a mid priced camera (say $500 or
less) that would allow me to do close up photos (say, small stuff that I
want to photograph for sale on eBay) and casual photos (say, people,
animals, places) that would serve as a record of an visit or a trip.
Are there any cameras out there in that mid-range that would allow me to do
both? If not, do you have any recommendation for a unit for close up work,
or for the casual stuff?
All help is appreciated -- Judy

There are many. When looking up what each make and model can do (e.g, at
www.dpreview.com), look for "Macro Mode".

You'd be surprised, you can often pick up a Canon Digital Rebel (300D)
slightly used for around $600. I've seen them go for as little as $500 even.
It's worth looking in to. Most digital point & shoot cameras are sloooow and
obnoxious.

Hi Judy,
If your not too worried about manual options, the Fuji F10 is quite
good at close up work using its Macro mode. You can focus to about 3
inches in wide angle, or 12 inches in telephoto.
It's a 6MP camera with a 3 times optical zoom and a large preview
screen and no optical viewfinder. You get about 400 shots on a battery
charge. It is also very fast for this type of camera.
You can see a few close ups of Butterflies that I have taken in my
garden this summer at this link.

All of the images except the 2 of the church were taken with the F10
Hope this helps.
