Windows Millenium. This camera has a dock with it and I've tried it without
the dock also and just the USB cable. I've reinstalled the software.
Something is just not right somewhere. Thanks for your response.

Windows ME was the worst of all the Windows that has ever been putout.
If you know someone who have Windows XP you might try connecting the
camea to that is see how it does.
I had a camera that just would not connect no matter what I did, it
turned out is was simply a bad USB cable, not likely but workth looking
at.

I knew you were going to say that when I told you Windows Me.

Hi Dinah,
I'm new to alt.photography, but old to Usenet, and don't know what the
generally accepted rule is on this group as to top or bottom posting, but
will chance a "When in Rome" and since the thread is going top post so far,
I'll follow suit. Since I'm one of them geeky diehard Linux users, your post
got me to wondering if my Kodak Easy Share DX-6490 and Printer Dock worked
with my WinME setup, so I booted into Windows this morning for the first
time since I had just installed the software and shut it down and got out of
that Windows environment. I'd never tried any of the Kodak Easy Share
Software so didn't know if it worked or not. But anyway, all that said, I'll
see if I can get down to the business at hand. ;-)
It sounds like we may have similar setups, with the exception of my camera
being the DX-6490, and the possibility that you have simply the dock 6000
without the printer since there seems to be two versions for the 7000 series
cameras. As far as I know, from past experience with Kodak EasyShare
software and previous Kodak cameras and docks I've used, the procedures are
about the same across the board.
But anyway, I seem to have no problem with e-mailing with the camera
attached directly to the usb, sitting in the dock, or by using a Lexar
3-in-one card reader and the SD/MMC card removed from the card and inserted
in the reader. If I use the cameras built in tag for e-mail feature and have
my addresses sent to the camera by way of the EasyShare's facility for doing
that, then just attaching the camera brings up the software for either
editing or including a message, etc.
Also once the photos are transferred from camera to computer, I may use the
Windows Explorer (My Computer) to just right click on a photo and e-mail it.
Of course this does not utilize the EasyShare Automatic rescale best suited
for e-mail and unless you have rar, zip or other compression utility on your
computer you will not have the ability to compress an original size photo
and may need to use a photo editor to re-scale to a suitable size.
Possibly you might un-install your EasyShare Software and then carefully
read the installation instructions in the manual, and not, do not have the
camera connected to the computer during the software installation. Do the
install and any necessary reboots it may ask for and then once it is
installed, connect the camera or connect the dock as per instructions and
then WinME will detect it and install the necessary drivers. Once that is
completed, I see no reason it should not work in all areas.
Note here!!! With mine, when I use the dock, the camera is inserted with the
mode switch in the off position and left off and print or transfer
facilities are handled by the controls on the dock. When connecting with
just a USB cable, the instructions say to have the camera off when
connecting the cable and then turn it on once connected and then when the
computer detects the camera and loads the EasyShare software, the transfers,
printing or e-mailing is done from within the software.
The system works, and unless you have a completely unconventional computer,
you should be having no difficulty with it. Please don't get upset when I
say this, but!!! Read The Manuals. I've been dealing with computers and
components every since starting out with keypunch and mainframes back in the
1970's and still today when I buy a new peripheral or install new software,
I take nothing for granted, (particularly my ability) and sit down and read
the instructions word for word, line for line until I'm relatively certain I
understand what it is I'm supposed to do. ;-)
I think you will get many hour of pleasure and enjoyment out of it. I know I
do with mine.
Just to see if it works as I said earlier since I'd never used it with
Windows, and to prove it can and does, here is a screenshot showing a shot I
took with the camera this morning and e-mailed to myself and the EasyShare
software up with another photo loaded ready to e-mail...
Caution! big pict, this is a dual headed set and the monitor real estate is
2048x768 ;-)

I'm well satisfied with mine. The Printer in the Printer dock prints good
quality 4x6 prints and I can print either from my computer using photos I've
taken from another source, or from the camera card or memory previously, or
allows me to do a quick print of a photo in the camera memory or on a card.
Best wishes and good luck. I hope you get it going.

Charlie: I previously did everything you suggested except when I tried the
USB cable with the computer and camera and by-passed the dock I can't
remember if I did turn the camera off before inserting the USB cable so will
try that again. I always read manuals, don't understand them but I read
them. I'm just wondering if something is not right with the memory card.

Ref. Your exchange with Scott on the Windows ME, about all I can say is,
"Araaaaaaaaaggggghhhhh!!!!!" Since I'd already booted into it yesterday to
find out what I was looking for to reply to you, I decided to go on and
work with it all day to do what little I needed to do and by the time I
quit, I had a headache, my neck hurt and I had a bad cramp in my left
middle toe. ;-)
What type of card are you using Dinah? My understanding is that any of the
so called SD/MCC cards should work. The only one I've used is a 128 meg PNY
el cheapo card I picked up to try before I invested big bucks in a 500 meg
or one gig card. I picked it up at Wally-World and the sales clerk assured
me it would work in my particular camera, and it has so far. I think I paid
about $17.75 for it.
When I caught you post this morning I got to wondering if the protected mode
lock on the side of the card might make a difference, so I tried mine with
the card in locked mode and it seems to make no difference as far as
transferring the images when the camera is in the dock or when using the
card in my Lexar 3-in-1 reader. It seems to be a simple write protect like
the old 3 1/2 in floppy. I notice unless I have my camera set to auto mode
and the card locked, it will tell me to reset the card. If I set the camera
to internal mode, it will turn on and only read the internal memory, and
then if I go into review mode, it will allow me to review photos on the
card, but when I attempt to come out of review mode, it will tell me the
card is locked and that I must reset it. I don't know. Kind of stumped.
In your original post, you state "the pictures are there and I could get
them printed out..." I assume you can review the photos on the camera or
possibly have even taken the card to someplace that prints photos from the
various cards or CD such as the photo section at Wal-Mart or elsewhere and
the only real problem is getting your ME to e-mail them.
One thing I'm not clear on completely. Have you been able to transfer the
photos to your computer's hard drive, ie. like put them in c:\My
Documents\My Photos\Kodak or what ever folder you choose to put them in? If
that is the situation and the photos can be moved to your hard disk, you
can e-mail them from OE, Netscape Mail, or one of the various e-mail
applications available as a simple attachment to an e-mail. You might need
to re-scale them with some photo editor such as IrfanView(a freeware simple
image viewer and manipulator) or one of the more advanced editors like
Photoshop, or as I use, the opensource Gimp(gnu image manipulation program)
or possibly one of the Ulead products.
Or...
Or as last resort, you could change operating systems and go to XP or Linux
or FreeBSD. ;-)
The card may be your problem, but I kind of doubt it. Since from all
indications you give the camera is recognizing it, writing to it, reading
from it, etc, but the problem lies in your computer's operating system or
the Kodak EasyShare software's ability to work with or on your computer or
computer/operating system.
I would be prone to give up on WinME before I gave up on Kodak. ;-)
I'm at the end of my abilities. ;-(
Wish I could do or offer more.
Best wishes on your quest and if you do get it to work, tell me how, here or
by e-mail so I can document it into my db of miscellany for future ref. ;-)
