Pop up flash necessary for flash use is prevented from opening when flash is
mounted on hot shoe. Is there a cable that would connect from camera hot
shoe to flash shutter cord or hot shoe connection. The digital camera does
not have a flash sync cable connection.

Yeah.  Don't recall if the "remote" sensor cord comes with the 285 or
not.  Still have to have the sensor itself on the hot shoe.

Alternatively - assuming your camera has a flash connection other than
the hot shoe - just plug into that on the camera and into the flash at
the jack on the side of the shoe.  Flash end requires a wierd plug
(thanks, Vivitar).

Ther are all types of cable/hot shoe connections available for mounting a
flash off casmera.  Any camera store or good catalog should offer a lot of
choices.  Easy solution might be a remote slave.  Vivitar makes one for the
283 flash that works on any hot shoe flash.  Just slip onto the hot shoe
mount of the flash, place anywhere you want and the camera flash will
trigger it. (you will have to figure out proper exposure settings for the
camera).  There also some inexpensive adapters intended to provide a pc cord
connection to cameras without one, some also allow a shoe mounted flash to
be mounted on top also, the extra high might just be enought to clear the
pop up flash without needing a cord.
