At the moment, I use the standard flash built onto the 300D, but don't
like the cold colours that this shows. I'd like to get a flash that
fits onto the camera, to try and improve my flash photography.

Could anyone recommend a good flash, that isn't too pricey? (UK)

Try looking at the Sigma EF500-ST... very powerful and adjustable - costs
around £100 (or less if you hunt around - best I've found was £70 I think).
Check for compatibility with your camera by taking the camera to a store and
trying it out first!!! I have an issue with that with my Nikon D70....

If you only want to improve the colour tone why not place/stick/glue/attach
a small piece of warm up lighting gel in front of the flash?

For what's it's worth I use Vivitar 283's. No ETTL  but a lot more accurate
than any of the Canon line I've used.
