Hi,

I am about to buy a digital camera and wasnt sure about certain makes.
I seen a BenQ that seemed to have good features, what are BenQ
camera's like for quality? The model I saw was a BenQ DCS40. Also, I
was considering a Canon Powershot 510. Ideally something that is of
good quality and a reasonable optical zoom capabilities. Any ideas?

I wouldn't recommend a BenQ at all from the reviews I've seen....

The correct choice of camera depends really on what you want it for.
If you want something you can use for candid shots and can put into your
pocket then go with cameras from Olympus and Canon or get a camera phone
with a high pixel count (Samsung are apparently releasing a 7MP one this
year!)
If you want something more versatile try Fuji (S5500, S7000), Panasonic (the
FZ20 is a cracker!) Canon or Nikon.
For top end (non dSLR) look at the Olympus 8080, Nikons or Canons.

Generally speaking the camera and film manufacturers cameras seem to do a
better job (IMHO) than other manufacturers as they have been in the imaging
game much longer and hence have more experience to draw upon.

My .02 .....

BenQ?  Do they come free in a pack of cereal?

I would purchase a camera from either a known photographic or
electronics manufacturer (Fuji, Nikon, Canon, Konica-Minolta, Sony,
Panasonic, etc.).  Dustbin-diving for bargains on no-name gear is just
asking for trouble.  Sure, you may get a cheaper price to start with,
but there's a reason they're not the hottest thing on the camera
market.

I went to BenQ's site.  The example photos (which are supposed to be
the top-quality pictures that really sell your gear) are uniformly
noisy, soft in focus, and just awful.  But hey, your camera will play
MP3's, and it's "Sporty".  BTW - they used to be "Acer".  'Nuff said,
I think.
