I'm looking for a script or program that will rename my files in the
following manner:
dsc**** to YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS
for example: DSC9876 to 20050221_134621
This information would come from the exif data in each file and the
time must be converted to 24hour military.
Any input would be appreciated.

Noel,
I use a program called "JPEG Resizer" and it can be found on
http://www.virtualzone.de
At least that's where the "about" page says it can be found for a newer
version or updates. I'm using version 2.1
I can get it to do what you describe.

Every couple of months Vladimir Veytsel posts a message
advertising his program that comes pretty close to doing what you
want. I haven't used his program so what follows is based on what
was said in his messages.
It uses 24 hour military time, and from his description (a bit
vague) gets the time/date from the exif data. It doesn't use all of
the date/time information to create the filenames, and the YYYY part
of the date stamp isn't used. You're supposed to save images in
YYYY folders.
Here are a couple of quotes from his messages, along with some
message IDs so you can retrieve them if you want (using Agent, just
double click on them and then click on the Message ID button.)
Depending on your server's retention you may not be able to retrieve
all of them. They range from Feb. 5, 2005 to April of last year.

Minolta has a viewer that also does batch file renameing called "Dimage
Viewer". It is a free download and you can get here....

or
If you have a problem downloading, post to this thread and I'll be happy to
e-mail it to you.

There's some shareware at http://www.hugsan.com/EXIFutils/index.html
that might do what you want.
Its features (cut n pasted from there):
These utilities can:
* edit the values of individual EXIF and IPTC fields in one for
more image files.
* copy values between EXIF and IPTC fields.
* extract EXIF and IPTC data from images in multiple directories in
a format suitable for importing to spreadsheets or databases.
* be used with scripting languages (e.g. Perl) to automate tasks
such as renaming of image files or generating image catalogues based on
EXIF data.
* be used with web servers to extract individual fields for use in
the generation of dynamic web content.
* copy EXIF, IPTC, and Flashpix data between TIFF and JPEG files
* Reinsert EXIF data that has been deleted by photo editing programs
* Rename image files based on the value of EXIF and IPTC fields
* Change the Last Modified time of a JPEG or TIFF file to match the
time the photo was taken
Hope it helps.

EXIFER and Mapivi (<http://mapivi.de.vu>) should both be able to do this.
