Yes, i am fully aware that the D70 rocks the world, and I would love
to get one, but the 8400 intrigues me. I have played with it at the
camera shop, and have taken a picture or 2 and printed it out, but
does anyone out there have an 8400 and love it? Or hate it? I am
going to Europe in March, and need a new camera to take with me, and
the thought of not taking an slr is very attractive to me as it is a
second honeymoon with my wife.
I have been watching for the full reports on Steve's Digicams and
DPreview, but i would love to hear some real-world reports about the
8400. Background info-I have been shooting for over 15 years with
mostly manual equipment (I cheated for 2 years with an Elan 7 I never
learned to love), have had a few solo shows, and a few group shows. I
photograph primarily in zoos and museums (lower light areas,
obviously), and will probably duck in a few of those in England.
(Although I promised my wife we would do things she wants to do also).
I am ready to take the digital plunge, and the D-70 is just a hair
out of budget, and a little bigger than I want to go with. Will the
8400 meet and exceed my expectations?

Although I don't have the actual numbers, the 8MP with a smaller sensor will
have smaller photsites, thus increased noise at the same ISO setting as the
D70 with 6MP and larger photosites. Also, you'll have interchangeable
lenses, faster start up time, and virtually no shutter lag.
I have the D100, which has mirror lockup and an add-on vertical grip/battery
pack; keep this in mind as the D70 does not have these abilities.
For a great review of the D100 & D70, see www.bythom.com.
