A friend of mine wants to buy a good quality new SLR and a set of reasonably
priced lenses. Any specific recommendations? Anything wrong with the
plastic body models, or are they just as good as the older metal-body
cameras? Thanks...

Digital SLR or 35mm SLR? I bought a Nikon F80/N80 last year and have never
looked back. :-)

Hi!
A better thing to do is buy a cheaper body and go for costlier lense
so that pics of different varieties can be taken easily. I have a
vivitar V3800N with 28-70 mm lens and it's working very fine. U can
also try for Nikon F10 or higher.

Are we talking digital? If so, my recommendations are Canon's 20D or
Nikon's D70 (depending on which lens system you want to buy into).

Hello Susan
There is a thriving second hand market out there with cameras to suit every
budget, my 35 mm is an old canon EOS 600 with series 1 canon lenses and I
have one large sigma lens, to tell you the truth it still does everything I
want it to do. A good buy at the moment are used Canon EOS 1 and 1N, a
professional camera body that would have cost well over ?1000 new that can
now be found for half or even less, the same goes for lenses, there are
loads to chose from. Of course there are plenty of other makes where the
same is true i.e. Nikon.
Good hunting

Good quality lenses and a reasonably priced body is always the better move -
preferably Canon or Nikon. Go for just one very good standard zoom and put
it on a budget body. At least you'll be shooting. Just add another good lens
later.

Here's my 2 cents...You might want to look for a body that allows
shutter release mechanism. There are some that don't have that
feature (I'm stuck with one!).
