I was thinking of heading down to the river valley with my camera, and
taking "free" pictures for ppl.  My idea is to take portraits and give ppl a
card where they can go see their pictures on the internet that night.  If
they don't want any fine, if they do I was thinking 20 bucks for an 8x12.
Anyone ever tried something like this? (I can get pictures printed for 4
bucks at Wal-Mart or 10 bucks at black)...
Gary Stewart - 29 Oct 2004 14:18 GMT
I haven't tried that, but it is definately an interesting idea. But,
where I live, $20 would bring on laughing, so take that into account. Will
people pay that in your area?

Nothing like shooting on spec to piss away your time and money.

Or sitting on your a.s doing nothing.  It may be a long shot, but it may be
$20 he/she didn't have before. dummy.

Unless you're doing it for personal enjoyment, any time you go out
hoping to make money on something you shoot, you're usually wasting
your time and materials.

In  Edmonton AB (Canada) there is a guy who has a contract with two or
three bars. Every night he goes to the bar and takes 20 photos. He then
puts them up on the bar's web site. Patrons can buy the photos (I think
it is $10 for a 5x7) if they wish. He says it is well worth his while.
So you are not that far off the mark.

In order to view the pics the customer has to enter an email address,
thus building up a client list he can use in the future. and a way for
the bar to send out cheap advertising.

Good luck

LOL, I'm in Edmonton too!  I'm not a really ppl person or a good
photographer of ppl yet (do mostly landscapes, see web page).  But I think a
line like "Would you like some FREE portraits," might get some interest.

" the customer has to enter an email address" out comes the bogus email
address. If they ask for any further information, I close the page and never
return. I already get enough spam on my computer, and I get enough junkmail
in the box out front. And what is to keep the bar from making a little extra
$$ on the side by selling the address lists?

You might want to watermark those online images to keep the subjects from
downloading them and getting them printed themselves, thus cutting you out
of the picture....no pun intended. FYI,.....Sam's Club does 8x10 for $1.99

Yea I plan on using Jalbum so its a flash display like on my web page, and
also putting big white letters across them so if they try and use the
printscreen it still won't be any good :-)

I don't know if it would work or not. One thing though. And this is a word
to the wise. Do not under any circumstances use or give permission for your
photos to be used for commercial purposes (example advertising) without
first having a signed release from all recognizable (faces) subjects.

If it does work how about posting your experiences? I might give it a try
myself!
Good Luck

THere are a few folks out in front of disneyland to take pictures of people
as they come in. There are three or four out there with cameras. I have no
idea what they charge, since I have never bought one.but it is a very good
idea since I know a lot of people would like a picture but forgot a camera.
