after many years with a digital point and shoot I am ready to move to a
DSLR. I think my camera of choice is a Nikon d70. The typical deal on the
internet is a camera body with a Nikkor 18-70mm lenses for $1,299 I found a
on line camera shop in New York that has  a camera body with a sigma 18-50
AND a sigma 55-22 lenses for $1,079!! I am sure the lenses quality is not as
good but is there anything wrong with a sigma lenses? It will be a long time
before I can buy more stuff so this looks like the biggest bang for the
buck.
Thank you for any advice you can give me

Check any "really good deals" from online camera shops against
www.resellerratings.com.  Don't get caught by the bait-n-switch.

Some "really good deals" are not. Perhaps the shop is selling gray market
bodies, a common enough practice but you are not going to get much in the
way of warranty or technical support.

The Nikon lens is made especially for the DSLR. It works very well with that
camera, but not any other cameras. I happen to like it a lot and find that
it meets my needs 90% of the time. I do use the 80 - 400 mm VR lens
frequently for taking photos of airplanes or similar applications, but few
people need it that much.

What exactly is "grey market"? I think my F80 was bought on "grey market" in
Saudi Arabia. Are these stolen goods (ie "black" market) or some other way to
get cheaper goods?  I was told Adorama (www.adorama.gr)  in Athens Greece also
sells "grey market" also so forget the international warranty.

Grey market simply means that it's being sold outside of the market
authorized by the manufacturer, not that it's stolen property or
illegally sold.

What it means for you, the end-user, is that the product is not
covered under warranty, you will most likely not be able to get
support for the product, and that the manuals and software may not be
in an appropriate language.  Updates and upgrades may also be
difficult to come by.

The reason they're cheaper is that they're not imported via the
standard distributor channels.  They're purchased at or near wholesale
in their native market (typically Asia) and then shipped to another
country.  Since you're not dealing with an export company, an import
distributor, and standard sales channels with attendant middle men,
the cost is lower.  However, you sacrifice the niceties of any sort of
backing from the manufacturer.
