reduce pictures??

We have to print out a lot of photographs at work (running WinXP & Office
XP) - 5 megapixel photos are taking an absolute age for our printer to
figure out then print

The pictures don't have to be that good (printer only prints 600 x 600
anyhow) - our staff are reducing the physical size of the photos to print -
but they don't understand that it still has the same amount (too much)
information sent to the printer

What I'm wondering is whether there is any XP built-in software or method to
print pictures in reduced quality as well as size?

MS Paint will resize photos!

Paint works fine for this. I usually do a "Save As" rather than a
"Save" and add a letter to the end of the filename.

Such as FOO.JPG changed to FOOa.JPG

That way it doesn't overwrite the original and I still have the full
size pic if I want it for something else. (or if I've screwed-up)

Paint seems to work fine thanks - i notice that Paint reduces the
quality/resolution just by open/resaving (no other changes)

Of course it does. Every time you save a jpg you compress it and throw away
loads of data .
Better programs like paint shop pro or photoshop allow you to choose the
compression level and therefore file size.

And the free Irfanview does too, plus lots of other little image tweaks.

Email them to yourself through the Email wizard and MS will offer to resize
them.

Otherwise you can download Irfanview for which there is a batch mode resize
command that will produce smaller copies of all photos in a folder.

it reduces the size and the dpi.

you can pick from pre-set sizes to custom size of your choice.

it will do single photos or batch

easy to use too

Microsoft distributes for free an ImageResizer "Power Toy". It adds a
"resize pictures" to the right click menu in the explorer. 4 preset
sizes: 320x240, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 plus a custom one. Can make
copies or replace the originals, and can process several files at the
same time.

Visualiser Photo Resize is a good one IMO. You can do a batch resize on
pictures in a folder. Its free too!
