I was thinking of getting one of these to replace my ageing Olympus
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/133118.  Does anyone know if it’s any
good (looks like a bargain to me)?  If not can anyone recommend
something for the amateur user that would be better?

It's as hard to recommend a camera for someone as to recommend shoes. If you
can, go to a local camera store and try them out. See what's comfortable for
you, within your intended use and budget. I you are only going to take
family shots for an album, almost any model you like will work.

I agree with above advice.  One of my cameras is a Fuji P&S and I am
very happy with it for the things I do with it. With the S8000 pictured
sporting a 18X zoom you better also buy a solid tripod.  High zoom is
very difficult to hand hold.

Thanks for the advice.  I've been meaning too get a decent tripod for
ages so this will be just the excuse I need.
