My wild guess is that your sales person mixed something up, maybe he meant
the new
Nikon AF-S DX VR 16-85 mm / 3,5-5,6 to be the "new" one and the 18-70 to be
the "old" one, those are the two only DX nikon lenses in that focal range
AFAIK.

That sounds like a pretty plausable explanation to me. :) That 16-85mm
sounds like it could be a great lens to use with my D70. I'm gonna have a
look at it online and see what the reviewers say, and I might just buy one
next week.

Hmm! Yeah, I noticed the price. It's a good lens for sure, but not 3 times
better than the 18-70mm.
