Nikon D70 - Still for sale?

Does anyone know where in the uk I might be able to purchase a brand new
Nikon D70 or D70s (and possibly 18-70mm lens)? I know it's an older camera,
but having owned one previously, I'd like to have one again for old time's
sake. :)

I did find one on the Amazon USA website, but they wouldn't ship it to the
UK for some reason.

Any assistance appreciated.

Hi JJ,
Must you have a new one? The reason I ask is that I just sold mine on
eBay, and although used it has been very well looked after since I
bought it brand new. It was still as good as new earlier this week
when I sold it. There are lots of others for sale too, many of which I
suspect have been equally well looked after. I only sold mine to fund
an upgrade to a D200 and if you're prepared to take a chance on second
hand you might just pick up a bargain as a lot of other D70 owners
appear to moving to the D200 which is now coming down in price since
the release of the D300.
Good luck with your quest,

Hi Paul, you are quite correct in suggesting there are bargains to be had,
but I just recently almost bought a second-hand D70 from a guy on ebay who
had said in his ad "this camera was to be a new hobby that never quite got
off the ground", and I thought 'great'! I then noted his name and googled
around a bit only to find masses of photos from a professional photographer
of the same name, who just happened to shoot with a D70. I could imagine
that here was a camera which might not have too much life left in it, so I
decided not to buy on that occassion. I have however taken your advice to
heart and am looking again at ebay....'but I'd still jump at the chance of a
brand new D70! :)

Cheers.

I took your advice, and as of this evening I am now the proud owner of a
Nikon D70...'purchased on ebay (2nd hand) for the sum of £300 including
18-70 mm DX lens and delivery charge.

Can't wait to get hold of my new camera and start shooting, Nikon style. :)

Cheers.

Glad to hear you got sorted JJ. I have had some feedback (and
pictures) from the guy I sold my D70 to and he is well pleased with
it. I'm glad it has gone to a good home. Meanwhile, I have had a
couple of weeks to play with my D200 and, subject to one or two
settings tweaks, it is giving me absolutely stunning results. One of
the first differences I noticed between the D70 and D200 is the larger
brighter viewfinder. The D70 will last you a long time but if/when you
feel you've outgrown it look to the D200, it's awesome (and coming
down in price now that the D300 is out)

Hi Paul! Yeah, the D200...'mmm! I would like to have one of those right now,
but finances don't permit at present. :( I don't doubt it will be my next
camera, but whether or not that'll be this year or next year is uncertain. I
know I'm gonna enjoy this new D70 for a while, but the first sign of
finances picking up and I will be off like a shot to my nearest Nikon dealer
for that D200....'or maybe D300? Nikon sure make some lovely cameras, and
lenses. Canons are cool, but Nikons are nice too! I am glad to be able to
shoot both makes as it will be good to do comparisons of my shots from each
model. This should be interesting! Have you posted any D200 shots yet on the
www? I'd like to see those if you have them.

Cheers.

I've only had the D200 for a couple of weeks so I'm still playing
about with it, but I'm well pleased with the results so far. Prior to
buying the camera I had a good look at the example photos on PBase -
good for ideas/inspiration and also let you see what the camera is
capable of

http://www.pbase.com/cameras/nikon/d200

They also have a D70 page

I know someone who has used a D70 for several years. She is quite happy with
it and uses only the basic non-stabilized kit lenses. Although she is not a
pro, she has sold a lot of images based on the strength of her composition
and print quality. Yes, I use a D200, but her images outclass mine.
My point, enjoy your camera, use it well.

It's not about the equipment.

I shot my first D70 photos today using the kit lens (18-70mm) and found the
quality of shot to be excellent. Having used Canon models for years, I now
wish I'd gone over to Nikon ages ago. I think the Canon photos are cleaner
(less noise), but the Nikon shots looked sharper to my eyes and the kit lens
introduced a rather nice bokeh and DOF to my portrait shots. I have to say I
am very pleased with my new camera so far.

I believe the D40 is the nearest new Nikon similar to the late lamented D70.
The D70 remains a terrific camera but it has always been hobbled by its dim
as dirt viewfinder.

How do the newer models e.g. D80 & D200 / D300 fare in this respect? Are the
viewfinders radically different to the D0's?

Yes, the D80 has a significantly larger, brighter viewfinder, same as
the D200. Pentaprism rather than pentamirror.
