Hi,

I'm looking for software that can do this:
1 - create slideshows for DVD
2 - has Ken Burns (pan-zoom) effect for the photo's
3 - has the ability to put a caption above or below (i.e. not on) the
picture.
4 - this caption should be automatically genereted from EXIF values and
XPdata (like title, comment)
5 - not too expensive (i.e. below 100 dollar)

This seems to be a very difficult task.  Especially point 3 and 4 seem
almost impossible.

Can anybody help me out here?

A tall order you want there.  A caption not on the picture means that
the picture cannot fill the frame, to leave room for the title.  This is
up to you as to how you size the image.

I don't know of any program that will extract the exif data and use it
as a title, or from a datafile.  The latter would have to be typed in
anyway, so you might as well type it into the slide program.

You might look at PicturesToExe, an inexpensive AV program that produces
very high quality exe files for showing via a computer and data
projector.  It will also make DVDs, either 4:3 or 16:9, but the picture
quality is vastly degraded on a TV compared with the computer version
due to TV's poor pixel equivalent, about 720 * 576 or so for PAL and
even less for NTSC.

http://www.wnsoft.com for the program, about $US 24 for the program, and
another $20 for the DVD capability.

Have a look at http://www.beechbrook.com for downloadable shows to get
an idea of what it will do.

There are around more/less dozen (or even more than 2 dozens) out there to
chose

> 2 - has Ken Burns (pan-zoom) effect for the photo's

I don't know what Ben Burns effect is, but as my understanding the Proshow
Gold and her bigger sister Proshow Producer have the most screen effects
comparing to other slideshow programs.

Caption is also one of Proshow strong points, not only above or below but
the caption can be moving top to botton, bottom to top, left to right or
right to left, but several effects as well.

Now, I believe none of the existing slideshow and most programs don't have
the option, and I don't see it's useful to dump 1-2 screen full of unuseful
stuff on screen.  Or I have no idea what kind of XRIF information you are
looking at, but here I can see about 2 screens full of XRIF info, and I
don't want them to appear on screen (especially slideshow).

> 5 - not too expensive (i.e. below 100 dollar)

The Proshow Gold is below $100 (around $70 if I remember it right), the
Proshow Producer is around $200-300 (I believe they started with something
like $400+ then lower the price).  You can find more info from the link

#4 is but not #3, or #3 may be difficult to most slideshow but not all,
and Proshow does very well on the caption which I use and like it.

I second the recommendation for ProShow Gold or ProShow Producer, I
have used both.  They have nice samples on their web site.  I
personally have not done anything as fancy as their samples, but fancy
enough.  Latest versions allow you to export to VCD,
DVD, .wmv, .avi, .flv (Flash streaming video), .mpg, screen saver,
and .exe.  Tons of slide transition effects, text motion effects,
picture motion/size/location effects, backgrounds, menus, and so much
more.  They also have their own web export media and web player which
I must say seems to have better quality then the FLASH streaming
video.  Here are a few samples:  http://blacksweb.com/jumc/yuc/2008springretreat/
