I had my mind set on the Canon 40D when I started reading up on the Nikon
D200.
Could anyone make a recommendation as to which one I should get?
I currently don't have a DSLR camera so lenses and accessories don't have to
be matched.
Much of the photography I'll be doing with this camera is horse shows so
with Canon's 6.5 fps it was a sure thing until I started reading more about
the D200.
I suppose ultimately it's all about picture quality but I like the software
that comes with the Canon.
If you are willing to recommend one over the other I'd appreciate it. I'm
feeling a bit lost.
Sure I'd love the D300 but it's too much for me.

Hi Jay,
Head on over to http://www.cameralabs.com/ where you can read a review of
the D200 and 40D (video review for the 40D as well).
I have the Canon 20D and am more than happy with it. However, before
choosing it may be prudent to wait a while, as a successor to the 40D may be
only months away (P.M.A.2008). Both Nikon and Canon have their devotees, but
I think you won't go wrong with either. I guess you will also need to
consider price, and especially lenses!!
Good luck!
Paul

I think that at this level it is which ever one you find easier to use
and feels better in your hand. The raw numbers of the spec are less
important.
I gave my ****** to a **** user a few months ago, I needed a couple of
shots with me in the frame, and he was blown out of the water in the
way it handled. This was despite his ****** being a higher spec than my
*******
SO once you have worked out how much you can spend and the approximate
spec try them out.
However I always recommend a Zenit :-)

When I am able to put a digital back on my Zeiss Ikon I'll give up the
Nikons. Not until then.

I've always told people to buy the best available camera that they can
afford... That said, both offer excellent camera's. Nikon tends to cost
more than Canon (bodies & lenses).

I am not Nikon user to know much small detail but general information by
reading, and most people compare Canon 20D and Canon 30D with Nikon D200
(and they pick Canon 20D and 30D over Nikon D200) and Canon 40D with Nikon
D300 (very close race).

Toyota or Honda?
If you want the best Nikon for the buck get the D80 before Nikon axes it (it
will and keep the D40x).
If you like Canons (they should rename them Cannons after their bulk) go for
that.
If you do not have lenses consider the Pentax 10d or the newest Sony (same
sensors as Nikon, built-in camera stabilization).
And shock of shocks, the Olympus 4/3s 3even have their devotees, although
lenses are pricey.

Sorry kiddo, its the D40x that the D80 replaced. Speed and ease of use with
a better external flash capability. The D40 and D40x both don't have the
Flash Commander wireless modes like the D80 has.
Now, I thought that the Canon 40D (Rebel XTI) was the competition to the
Nikon D80 and the Canon 5D was the competition to the Nikon D200?? I have
the D80 and my friend has the 5D. The 5D is faster, can shoot more pics in
larger bursts and in my opinion is slightly better in quality then the D80.
The 5D it seems has slightly more noise then my D80 and the Canon has a hard
time or longer time searching out the Focus in Autofocus mode then my D80 in
very low light levels. We were outside on Christmas Eve taking shots of the
Full Moon with a slight cloud haze. I had a little bit of problem focusing
because of the cloud cover. He had a bigger problem trying to autofocus and
was cursing up a blue streak. I thought it was real funny, but since we
were over there house I did keep my mouth shut for a change. Too funny
though. He was pissed. When we did go in, he put my pics on his monster
puter with CS2 and we played with trying to get the best looking shot. :þ
he did Not put his shots up on his puter. I wonder why??? He has a very
nice setup though. He has two external hard drives for backup for his pics,
works with two screens and so on. Real classy, he has a lot of room in his
basement. LOL I dont have any of the room he does.

I believe the D80 replaced the D70 and D70s. Nikon has started reducing
the D80 price now. I would not be surprised if they announce a replacement
for the D80 is a few months.

Do you think they will axe it or just upgrade it?

I use the D200 and have friends who use Canons. The best advice you were
given is to take each one for a test drive and see which is most comfortable
in your hands. Then consider at the various lenses you are likely to use and
how they feel. You sound like you are on a budget so perhaps you should
think about whether you really need image stabilized lenses for shooting
horse shows. Consider whether you would be better off getting non-stabilized
lenses with perhaps a D200, which would give you automatic sensor cleaning.
Just my thoughts.

I would like to say thanks to everyone.
Excellent advice in there.
