What the f.ck is that?

What are you? A jack of all trades by the look of it. How about specialising
in something first and geting good at it. At the moment your website is
uninspiring and dull, you landscape photos are crap, plain crap you can do
better.

his work. You can safely ignore this sad and frustrated idiot.

I have to agree. Besides taking too long for each image to load, the
"portraits" are awful, and the landscapes are downright boring.

Well I'm glad you have mastered the art of being a total jerk.  What
other services and talents do you offer?  I actually have had several
successful gallery shows and I sell prints pretty regularly. I asked
for constructive feedback and all you offer is a flame job.  How about
growing up and learning how to critique properly?

So did you use a Magic Marker to draw a line in the viewfinder so that
the horizons are exactly in the middle each time?

If you're doing gallery shows with this stuff, I need to move to San
Fagcisco.

I just got the following strange email from followfocus....

I would appreciate it if you would please put a stop to Chris Hills
constant defamatory language against me and my website all over the

slander and libel to your location as the harassing emails and posts are
coming from your company IP address range.

Thank you..

As far as I know I have never even looked at his web site. Much less
commented on it.

However I don't know if I have said any harsh words to Gary in the usual
cut and thrust of NG debate. I may have done. But certainly not
"constantly". You should see some of the other NG's they make this one
seem tame.

Has anyone else had any similar humorous emails?  Personally I am not
likely to travel to the US so he can do what he likes with a lawyer.

Take your best shot. You can't sue somebody for expressing an opinion.
And the photographs aren't that great. Do you pay these people to come
to your exhibitions?

That's what I thought when I got the email from follow focus threatening
legal action against me for comments I hadn't made!

For the OP, you have an issue with criticism.  Granted some of it was
just poor flaming but those that did take the time to offer comments
you discount them with some sort of gallery showing.  Do you know how
easy it is to get a showing at some galleries.  Some of them are
screaming for diversity on their floors and if they don't offer alot
of photographs then you are in.  Because you happen to get a gallery
showing does not necessarily represent success in this field.

You are correct that the internet does reduce the quality of images.
Having said that it is more than possible to post images that are tack
sharp and the colors correct.  Do not blame the internet for your
short comings in post processing.  I spent a fair amount of time
looking through your images and I can honestly say that they do not do
anything for me.  Technically most of them have a softness to them
that tells me that you are either missing the focus at the time of
shooting or that you do not have a good grasp on how to produce sharp
images for internet display.  Either way it is reflecting poorly on
you and I would suggest that you take the necessary steps to correct
this.  Your statement at the bottom of your homepage "*Note: Photos
quality have been scaled down for web site viewing. Actual photos are
a higher resolution and quality." is an out.  Take a look around the
net and you will see photographers work that has been reduced in size
but still display quickly and are incredibly sharp and their colors
are vivid and reflective of the original scene.  There are some
photographs there that can probably be made very good with some good
post production skills.  Generally I find them to be a collection of
snapshots.  There is nothing wrong with that, pick your audience and
then focus on them.

What one puts in the "about me" is totally up to them but as a
frequent browser of other photographers work I get so tired of the
adage that so many use that reads similar to yours "I bought a pin
camera when I was 2 and fell in love with photography".  If this site
is truly a site to garner future business tell them something about
what you can do.  It is important to realize where you have been but
it really is the past.  What is your vision for the future for your
customers.  I don't see anything on this site that tells me what you
want to shoot commercially.  If I was an art director and saw the vast
differences in your subject matter I wouldn't know what to think
because you don't explain yourself.  It is very possible to be very
proficient at many different areas in the photography realm, you just
need to sell yourself in that fashion.

If you are going around and posting that you are going to sue people
because they have flamed you on an open internet board, it just makes
you look childish.  You have to take the good with the bad and you
really seem to have trouble with the latter.

I have been doing professional photography for many years.  I worked
as an assistant for years to learn the trade and then freelanced and
finally quitting my full time job to make my living doing
photography.  I couldn't be happier and I do understand this industry
very well. You can flame me if you want.

To everyone

I have just had an email exchange with John Nicholson
Co owner and creator Followfocus Productions
http://www.followfocusproductions.com

It appears that back in December a former employee on being let go from
Followfocus managed to use various company email accounts to attack
various people, including myself, as senior staff members of
Followfocus.

The highly offensive, homophobic and xenophobic rants from this former
employee masqurading as a senior memebr of Followfocus have nothing in
to do with Followfocus or the far more professional emails I have just
received.

The posts in this thread where I copied emails  from Followfocus were in
fact  caused by this rouge employee. NOT Follofocus.

Therefore I have decided to post this clarification. BTW Followfocus
have not asked me to do this, it is my own idea as I think it is only
fair to Followfocus who have had their business sabotaged by a former
employee.

Never saw a picture.  What I did see was a poorly designed website.
Hopefully you had your 15 year old next door neighbor design your website
instead of paying for it.  Get rid of the flash.  Do the KISS method of
website design.  (Keep It Simple Stupid)

Other then that... I am connecting at work were we have TONS of band
width, and never saw a picture... so it must take forever to have them
show.  Good luck with that.

Hi Lee,
try wearing glasses. Its obvious you are blind and a total jerk. You
and Chris both have no tact and no talent for anything other than
flaming me.  I designed the site myself and as a beginner at web
design, I think I did pretty good for my first go around.  Maybe you
should come to my gallery show in LA next Spring. I won the juried
competition. Then you will see and understand that: 1. the web
degrades picture quality, 2. the prints are amazing and sell pretty
well, 3. I have been published in several magazines. 4. my gallery
show(this next one will be my 16th show) draw a lot of crowds.
Actually, I will make sure and post photos so you can see for
yourself.  Maybe next time you will learn how to critique instead of
flame...Your so childish its really sad and I pity you....

As far as bandwidth, that is not the problem. The pictures are tested
and load in less than 5 secs.  Try using a different browser instead
of Explorer..

As soon as I saw the black background I knew tha the
designer of the site was more interested in looking to be in
style than trying to show the photos to best advantage.

A person viewing a Web page with a black background has less
light entering his eyes.  Like a camera that opens the
aperture to compensate for low light, the eye opens its
iris.  As with a camera, a larger iris translates into
poorer acuity.  Anyone who knows photography should
understand that.

It is hard to read the small print on the pages, especially
the small print in dark blue at the bottom of the opening page.

Can't disagree that these are photos..

However, I think photography is something else. Not very different, just
better.

And your website is, umm, yeah.
Would it be impertinent to ask if you have Italian ancestry?

Take care what you say to him....

I just got the following strange email from followfocus....

Subject: Harassment from one of your employees
I would appreciate it if you would please put a stop to Chris Hills
constant defamatory language against me and my website all over the
net.  I will be having my lawyer send a cease and desist order for
slander and libel to your location as the harassing emails and posts are
coming from your company IP address range.

I should like a full apology from Gary Nicholson and

I leave it to others to comment on the standard (or lack of) of his web
site, pictures, level of politeness  and mental stability

BTW Followfocus
have not asked me to do this, it is my own idea as I think it is only
fair to Followfocus who have had their business sabotaged by a former
employee.

Regards
  Chris

I checked out your site and your pics.
your focus is  soft , you might try cropping some of the BG in most of
your pics , cropping seems to bring out the subject a lot more and
the viewer does not have the distraction  of un necessary BG,
the tiny miniature thumbnails and very slow loading flash makes your
site very time  consuming and hard to pay any real attention to. Very
few people that are interested in Photograph sites will be inclined to
'steal' your pics so go ahead and put something that can be seen on
your site.
