Buying Used Items from Amazon UK

Hi,

I was very interested in seeing the thread about 2nd hand sources, as
I'm currently thinking about buying a nearly new camera from  Amazon UK
(their Market Place service). Has anyone any experience of buying this
way?

I am rather worried that the goods appear to be dispatched by the
seller, and not Amazon.  I've always been very satisfied with the
quality of Amazon's service for new items (books). Delivery has been
fast, and packaging second to none. They claim that they insist on the
same standards from their sellers.  How do they achieve this?

Are camera manufacturers likely to honour their guarantees for goods
bought in this way.

Any advice and help will be most appreciated.

Regards

I haven't bought any photo gear this way but I have bought a second hand
book. Two weeks after the order I emailed the supplier to ask where it was
(having had the order confirmation from Amazon straight away) and didn't get
a reply. A couple of days later I tried again and suddenly everything seemed
to kick into gear. I received the book three days later but the order date
was shown as the date of my last email, not the original date.

I may just have been unlucky in this instance, but it has rather put me off.

I bought a second-had XD card this way, no problems at all.

I bought a video on behalf of my daughter and it proved to be faulty.
The vendor has promised me a full refund but I haven't seen it as yet.
I would be very cautious using this system.

I've sold through this system also and it is somewhat 'light' on
controls, not sure I'd spend much money through it.

What Guarantee.  If the seller is a trader they must give one but as
they will be using amazon to hide the fact they are a trader. then
chances are the goods are not reliable.

Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.  Amazon is fine - like you I've bought
books, DVDs etc.  God knows why they bother with Marketplace.  Frankly I'd
go to Ebay, at least there's feedback to look at.

Many thanks Steve, and all the others who contributed.  I'll take your
advice, and leave well alone.  I was very tempted as the camera was an
Olympus 5050, new and unopened, an unwanted gift.  But it was serious
money, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Cheers
