Hi there,

I've checked with Jessops and am wary of ebay(!) - are there any other
worthwhile resources for used lenses in the UK? I'm trying to decide
between a 100 f/2 and a 135 f/2 and finding the longer one used may make
my decision easier!

Thanks in advance

FWIW Gavin I've had very few problems with ebay. Right now I'm waiting on a
cine lens I ordered from a seller in the 'states. Normally I wouldn't buy
something like that from abroad but this was a scarce item.....

But I have a couple of dozen lenses here, a Krasnogorsk a Bolex numerous old
m42 bodies, a laptop ana a couple of electric guitars all bought off
ebay.....

About the only other place I use is Jessops in Sauchihall St or Livingston
or maybe Quiggs in Parnie St (Glasgow). I've had some good buys from
Jessops... and Quiggs is ever reliable...

Cheers, Matt I'll keep my eye out. I'll check out Quigg's next time I'm
in Glasgow too

Thanks

Out of all of these I have only personally used MXV, and had
excellent service.

Beware, though, prime lenses are comparatively rare these days and do
not show up nearly as often as the cheaper zooms in used listings.
When they do appear, they generally sell very quickly.

Ian, that's a great list thanks. Google was giving me grief so you've
saved me a ton of clicking.

Tell me about it! If I could afford or justify a 70-200 2.8 I wouldn't
be poking around dusty corners of the internet hoping someone's got a
decent prime lying around!

Add to that list:

http://www.westcliffphoto.com
http://www.mrcad.co.uk

Had good service from both of these - although only as a personal caller
(I like to go and see what I'm buying first!) so can't say what their
mail-order is like. I'd guess, Gavin, that a personal call to Southend
or Croydon might be a bit of a trek for you though!

Hi !

I confirm: excellent service for MXV.

I also used Ffordes: they are also excellent and have good/fast email
communication.

Be careful to ebay if it is shipped from outside the EU, you may have to pay
the VAT + customs charges: I bought a new 100 macro f/2.8 usm like that and
had to pay ?70 at reception ... ended up still a lot cheaper than the high
street but it is still unexpected extra coast.

Thanks, Bertrand - MXV have a pretty good list so cheers for the thumbs
up.

I've figured VAT charges into any purchase from abroad - I'm VAT
registered anyway and need this for my work so it's no real difference
for me.

Thanks

What I've found is that stuff addressed to me personally rarely charged by
customs. If it's addressed under my business name though it almost ALWAYS
attracts customs attention....

It's true that I had made a mistake at the time: I asked to be shipped at my
work place but that was for my private use ... That will teach me for the
future !

I agree, http://www.mxv.co.uk are really great to deal with.
Bought all our gear from them, absolutely no problems with them, nice crowd.
No connection with them except as a customer

I've bought a few lenses from ebay both new and second hand and no problems.

I bought a new Sigma 12-24mm for Canon EOS from New York on Thursday evening
last week, (about ?400 inc shipping by Fed-Ex), they shipped in on Friday,
it arrived at 10 this morning.
That's faster service than if I bought from a UK on-line shop!

Second hand is fine, just make sure there are some good photos of the lens
and a good description so you're happy with the condition. Check the
seller's feedback, look for happy buyers of similar equipment and little or
no recent negitive feedback. Most sellers (me too when I'm selling) would
rather have an honest description than risk getting negitive feedback
afterwards. If it's a high-value item pay the extra for insured shipping so
if it gets lost or damaged you'll get the money back.

Thanks for the reply, Alan - that's a good example of when eBay's great.
I'm not totally wary - I've bought some good stuff myself, and sold even
more but used bargains seem pretty rare. Most time people seem to pay
close to new prices for anything decent. I'm VAT registered so the sales
go for even more than I could buy new in the UK for ;-)

I am thinking of buying from the states - someone like B&H probably. The
135 f/2 works out around £200 cheaper. But I'm not sure whether I'd be
better with a 100mm so Jessop's return policy is attractive!

That's all excellent advice - Cheers

Gavin,

I've bought from B&H also, good service, but UPS fees on top of import duty
& customs were higher than I expected.
