Will this camera take any card bigger than 32 MB?
The manual says 32 MB. Is this because that's the biggest card it will
take, or because it was the biggest card out at the time?

You might find a perusal of :

confirms your fears.
If you visit a local photography store they might let you try a larger
card in the hope it could turn into a sale. ;-) The manufacturer is
likely to quote the capacity of the card allowed as the highest they've
tested it with, so you may get lucky.
Good luck !

My MX1200 would only take 32meg according to the manual but that was the
best available at the time. Certainly takes 64 and as I emailed fuji to
try and find out if it would take a 128 and they said yes I would be
confident that the mx2900 would take a bigger card.
