I note Minolta (IIRC) have brought one out already.  I am considering
getting a Canoscan.  Are there any rumours they are to upgrade that to a
higher DPI spec than the current 4000 as if so I will hang on for a bit
longer?

Scanner resolutions will inevitably increase. When you get up to 5600 (or
whatever that new Minolta is) I would think that the quality of the optics
becomes more important than the resolution of the CCD. A cheap 5600 may not
be a better buy than, say, the Nikon CoolScan 4000. But it may be ;-P If you
need a scanner now, the current models are pretty good, and rumours in
photographic products seem less reliable than other markets. Not heard any
rumours (though haven't been looking for them!).

Not a very useful post, sorry....

Appreciate what you say.  What I want to avoid is buying one now that is
very quickly superceded as the industry standard jumps up a notch.

Isn't that just the inevitable fact of digital life?????

The number of ppi (not DPI) is only a very rough guide to scan
quality.  The Canoscan 4000 is inferior to the Nikon Coolscan 4000 and
gives only slightly better scan quality than the Minolta Dual Scan III
and the Nikon LS-40 both of which are nominally rated at 2800 ppi.
Even the cheaper 2800 ppi models such as the Acer (BenQ) are very
close to the image quality of the Canon.

The new Minolta Scan Elite 5400 may well be the "best buy" and I would
strongly advise waiting for some reliable reviews on its performance
out of a retail box (most magazine and web site reviews are unreliable
because of the need to please advertisers/sponsors).  If  reliable
reviews indicate that it lives up to its specifications, this could
well be the best of all home scanners, and well worth waiting for.

Thanks.  That advice is a help.

John.
